What is the DigiD activation letter?

The DigiD activation letter is the postal letter used to activate your DigiD account after applying online. It contains an activation code that confirms you have access to the registered address linked to your BSN.

Without activating DigiD, you may not be able to log in to important Dutch government websites.

Why does the address matter?

The letter is sent to the address registered with the Dutch authorities. If your address is wrong, incomplete or not yet properly registered, the letter may not arrive.

This is one of the most common reasons expats get stuck with DigiD setup.

How long does the letter take?

It often arrives within about 3 to 5 working days, but timing can vary. If you recently registered your address or moved, allow extra time.

Do not wait until the day you need to file taxes or apply for benefits. Start early.

What can go wrong?

Common DigiD activation problems include:

Applying before your BSN/address registration is processed
Using an old or incorrect address
Missing the activation deadline
Losing the letter
Not setting up the DigiD app afterwards

What is DigiD used for?

DigiD is commonly used for:

MijnOverheid
Belastingdienst tax portal
Toeslagen portal
Municipality services
Health insurance and pension portals

Can Benefitly help if you do not have DigiD yet?
